Since 1968 - when the late Molly Mawson formed the group - an exhibition has been held in the Fratry, Carlisle Cathedral, usually in late July and early August. Profits from the sales have helped to rebuild the ancient Tithe Barn and to refurbish the Fratry in respect of seating, wall hangings, sculptures and curtains. The group has also provided the Cathedral with wrought iron gates for the Treasury and helped towards the provision of lighting for the choir stalls and new seating.
This year marks the group’s 49th exhibition; each year proceeds from the exhibition are shared between the Cathedral and a chosen local charity. Usually between £1500 and £3000 is raised for the charities.
New artists exhibit each year. The selection process takes part every April. Artists who wish to be considered must submit four pieces of work and the entire C&CA committee forms the Selection Committee. Individual voting takes place and the votes are counted; applicants must receive more than 50% of the votes to be accepted.
This year’s exhibition hopes to raise funds for Carlisle Cathedral and Blood Bikes Cumbria Community.
